Ductless Service Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is a ductless heating and cooling system?
Ductless heating and cooling systems are known by many names including mini split system or mini splits. No matter what term you hear, a ductless heating and cooling system is a unique way to heat and cool your Boulder home!
A ductless heating and cooling system has two main components: an indoor air-handling unit and an outdoor compressor/condenser unit. That’s it! The indoor and outdoor units are connected via a conduit that holds the power cord, refrigerant and suction tubing, and a condensate drain. There can be more than one indoor air-handling unit installed to create separate heating or cooling zones in a home or office environment.
How does a ductless heating and cooling system work?
Ductless heating and cooling systems use electricity to generate and transfer heating or cooling using outdoor air. For heating, a heat pump is installed that pulls in outside air and uses refrigerant (like in your refrigerator) to warm this air where the warmer air is pulled through the indoor unit. The indoor unit fan flows the warmer air to heat the room.
In warmer Colorado months, the system is reversed. The principles are simple and allow a ductless heating and cooling system to serve as both a heating solution and an air conditioning unit!
Is a ductless heating and cooling system efficient?
Compared to other heating and cooling solutions, a ductless heating and cooling system is more energy efficient. In those cold Boulder winters, because the system is not producing – only moving – warmer air, it uses much less energy. For summertime, because a ductless heating and cooling system requires no ductwork, no cooled air is lost due to duct leakage!
Ductless heating and cooling systems also allow the user to control every zone independently, so you can heat or cool only the areas you want without spending to climate control an entire house.
Where are good places for a ductless heating and cooling system?
There are several suitable applications for ductless heating and cooling systems. Maybe your home needs to supplement or even replace baseboard heating, you’d like to eliminate unsafe space heaters, you are building a prefabricated house or exterior building or you’re adding a new room to your home.
Good options to install ductless heating and cooling systems in our Boulder, Colorado home or business include:
- Bonus rooms or newly built-on rooms that are too hot in summer or too cold in winter
- Historic homes where adding ductwork would damage the property
- Large family rooms or new add-on rooms that have hot or cold spots
- Converted attics or basement that never feel comfortable
- Rooms with large windows, especially those east or north facing, that aren’t comfortable
- Homes that are experiencing high energy bills because the current system can’t adequately cover the heating and cooling needs
What are the advantages of a ductless heating and cooling system?
Ductless heating and cooling systems require no ductwork in a home or office space. For remodels, new construction, older homes or discrete rooms or areas, ductless heating and cooling system installations mean great savings and considerable ease by not having to install ductwork.
Ductless heating and cooling systems have lower operating costs than central air conditioning and other heating systems and offer both comfort solutions in one! Because of the elimination of ductwork, you can enjoy better indoor air quality, less dirt and dust, and provide filtration solutions to trap airborne pollutants. Installation of ductless heating and cooling systems is less complicated and easier than other HVAC systems.
Qualified and experienced installers will correctly size indoor units and determine the ideal location to get the maximum benefit. As with central systems, it’s important that ductless heating and cooling systems are sized correctly to maximize energy efficiency and cost savings.
