What is Ductless?
What is Ductless & How Does it Work?
Have you heard about ductless air conditioning, ductless heat pumps, or mini-split systems but you’re not sure what ductless actually is or how they work… really, just, what is ductless, anyway? We’ve got all the answers!
What Are Ductless Systems?
Ductless systems come by many different names, but they all describe a heating and cooling solution that is based on a simple operating principle. Ductless heating and cooling deliver targeted temperature control - perfect for the Boulder area - where conventional central heating or cooling that requires ductwork is impractical.
Widely used throughout Europe, ductless systems have recently gained adoption in the U.S. because they are an efficient choice for home comfort! Because of the design, ductless is a great alternative to window units, space heaters, or traditional HVAC systems where adding ductwork is costly. Ductless heating and cooling offer comfort in targeted zone areas.
How Does Ductless Work?
Ductless heating and air conditioning are provided from one unit. Let’s start with the components of a ductless system:
- Outdoor unit: A compact unit is placed outside next to your home or building and contains the compressor and condenser plus the heat pump, if you choose to include heating into your system.
- Indoor unit: Individual indoor blowers are installed in identified zones to heat or cool a space. Each outdoor unit supports up to four indoor blower units.
- Conduit: The outdoor unit is connected to each blower through a small conduit that houses power, refrigerant line, and condensate drain line.
The outdoor unit compressor and condenser apply pressure to the refrigerant that then runs through the lines connected to indoor units. Indoor blowers include air-handlers, evaporator coil, and blower. For air conditioning, the warm air is blown over the cooled evaporator coils (like in a car air conditioning system), which then circulates cool air into a room or area. For heating, the system is reversed, and warm air is transferred into the area.
Ductless systems deliver stable, reliable, and cost-efficient comfort!
